Survey: Holiday shoppers made merry with this channel

Consumer participation in one particular type of commerce surged during the holiday season.

According to analysis of users of the Afterpay Ltd. payment platform from Nov. 15 through December 2019, mobile shopping was by far and away the preferred way consumers shopped and paid for items using the Afterpay service. Nearly 80% of customers used mobile devices for their purchases this holiday season, a 12% increase from the same period in 2018.

Black Friday (Nov. 29) was the most popular shopping day of the season globally for customers using the Afterpay service. According to Afterpay, compelling holiday sales deals offered by many retailers primarily drove strong Black Friday traffic. The second most popular shopping day was Cyber Monday in the U.S. (Dec. 2) and Boxing Day (Dec. 26) in Australia and New Zealand (Dec. 26). Global basket size increased by more than 3% in the 2019 holiday shopping season relative to 2018.
