Staples Canada’s new store concept features bold take on coworking

Staples Canada unveiled a new format that aims to be a one-stop destination for business needs, including a place to work.

The retailer, whose new tagline is “The Working and Learning Company,” launched the new concept in a renovated location in downtown Toronto. The 20,00-sq.-ft. store features over a thousand new products, a next-level “Solutions Shop” with marketing services for businesses, an auditorium-styled “Spotlight” space for community events and guest speakers and a café operated by one of the city’s favorite independent coffee shops.

Additionally, and in its biggest point of distinction, the new store is home to the company’s first-ever coworking space, called Staples Studio. The 4,500-sq.-ft. area is designed as an innovative and collaborative workspace, complete with lounge spaces, community kitchens, private and shared offices, modern furniture (standing desks are available) and meeting rooms fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology that includes wireless charging and built-in live streaming. An on-site manager and staff is available to assist members.

Unlike other coworking spaces in Canada, members will also have access to an extended suite of services, including in-house marketing, web design, print and tech services, via the in-store Solution Shop, Staples noted.

"The way we work has changed, and we are changing with it,” stated David Boone, CEO, Staples Canada. "We've listened to what the business community expects from a Coworking space and we're delivering.”

Access to the coworking Studio is available on a membership basis, with options that range ranging from a drop-in day pass to monthly dedicated private offices. Staples said it plans to roll out the coworking concept to other relevant markets in the future.

Another area of focus in the new store is the Spotlight auditorium, which is designed as a place for entrepreneurs and the local community to learn, meet and share ideas. It features a free weekly speaker series.

“We've designed this new store with community in mind," said Boone, who described the space as “a working and learning hub.”

“We want to bring people together who are focused on personal and professional growth, to be an inspiring, affordable place for entrepreneurs, businesses and students to work, meet and collaborate,” he added.

In December, Staples unveiled a new brand identity with the tagline “Working and Learning Company,” and a refreshed logo designed to reflect the collaboration between customers and store associates.
