Selfridges continues to push the envelope of department-store retailing in its effort to attract and engage shoppers.
The U.K. retailer plans to open a permanent, state-of-the-art three-screen movie theater, complete with an underground bar, inside its iconic store on Oxford Street. Selfridges is partnering with independent exhibitor Olympic Studios on the venue, which will open in November. The Cinema at Selfridges will have both an in-store and street entrance. It will show a mix of blockbusters and indie films.
The cinema is the latest part of Selfridges £300 million investment in its flagship, which is the second biggest department store in London. The move will make Selfridges the first department store in the world to house a permanent movie theatre.
“We are delighted to announce the launch of our very own Selfridges cinema within our London Oxford Street store later this year,” said Selfridges managing director Simon Forster. “For us this is a very exciting yet natural extension to what Selfridges does, which is to provide customers with an extraordinary experience all year round.”
This past November, the retailer celebrated the
launch of a new designer streetwear department in its London flagship by installing the U.K.’s only permanent and free indoor skateboarding bowl.
Selfridges was voted as the Best Department Store in the World at the Global Department Store Summits in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2018.
