Stop & Shop reportedly closing seven Massachusetts stores Oct. 31

Stop & Shop is closing seven locations in Massachusetts.

A regional Northeast grocer is reportedly shuttering seven stores in Massachusetts as part of a larger growth strategy its parent company is pursuing.

Stop & Shop, a subsidiary of Ahold Delhaize USA, is closing down the Massachusetts locations permanently as of Thursday, Oct. 31, according to Boston.com. The grocer confirmed to Boston.com it will shutter the following stores in the state:

  • 932 North Montello St., Brockton.
  • 36 New State Highway, Raynham.
  • 341 Plymouth St., Halifax.
  • 539-571 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury.
  • 415 Cooley St., Springfield.
  • 545 Lincoln St., Worcester.
  • 24 Mattakeesett St., Pembroke.

The closures are part of the global "Growing Together" strategy Netherlands-based Ahold Delhaize, parent of Ahold Delhaize USA, launched in May 2024 to grow sales, maintain margins and achieve sustainability and inclusivity goals.

In July 2024, Ahold Delhaize USA said will close 32 underperforming stores on or before Nov. 2, 2024. The stores are located in states including Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island as well as Massachusetts.

All seven stores being reported as targeted for closure by Boston.com were on the list originally posted in July. A store in Newton, Mass. included on the July list is not included on the latest reported list. Products in the impacted stores will be discounted starting this week and the company said it will work with local food pantries to donate food for local consumers’ Thanksgiving meals. Following the closures, Stop & Shop will continue to operate more than 350 stores across its five-state footprint of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island. Stop & Shop associates at impacted locations will be offered other opportunities within the company.

"Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer of more than 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers and communities," said Gordon Reid, president, Stop & Shop, when the company announced the closures in July. "As we announced in May, Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand."

Ahold Delhaize USA, a division of Zaandam, Netherlands-based Ahold Delhaize, operates more than 2,000 stores across 23 states under the Food Lion, Giant Food, The Giant Co., Hannaford and Stop & Shop banners.
