SpartanNash taps company exec as new legal chief

SpartanNash is turning internally for its new chief legal officer.

The grocery retailer/distributor is promoting Ileana McAlary from senior VP to executive VP, chief legal officer and corporate secretary. McAlary, who was hired in November 2021, oversees the company's legal, government affairs, compliance and aviation team.

She also serves as corporate secretary of the SpartanNash board of directors and president of the SpartanNash Foundation.

In addition to her role at SpartanNash, McAlary serves on the board of trustees for Davenport University. She joined the company from Wolverine Worldwide, Inc., where she most recently served as the VP associate general counsel and compliance officer.

Prior to Wolverine Worldwide, McAlary held roles as senior counsel at MeijervInc.; as corporate counsel III at Amway Corporation; and as an attorney at the Miller Johnson law firm. McAlary earned her undergraduate degree at Grand Valley State University and her law degree from Wayne State University Law School.

SpartanNash taps CPG exec as new HR chief

McAlary is the second woman named to a C-level position at SpartanNash in the past six months. In September 2022, the company appointed Nicole Zube to the role of senior VP, chief HR officer. Zube joined SpartanNash from Kellogg Company, where she most recently served as head of HR – U.S. Commercial. She served in a variety of human resources roles at Kellogg during her 10 years at the company.

The core businesses of SpartanNash include distributing grocery products to independent and chain retailers, its corporate-owned retail stores, and U.S. military commissaries and exchanges. The company also operates a fresh produce distribution network and the Our Family brand. SpartanNash serves customer locations in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Europe, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and Djibouti. The company owns 145 supermarkets—primarily under the banners of Family Fare, Martin's Super Markets, D&W Fresh Market, VG's Grocery, and Dan's Supermarket.
