Simon malls will close for Thanksgiving Day

Simon malls are going dark on Thanksgiving Day for the second consecutive year.

The country’s largest owner of shopping malls said it will not open any domestic properties on November 25, Thanksgiving Day. Its centers will reopen on Black Friday.

The move by Simon comes as more and more retailers, ranging from Walmart and Target to Best Buy and Dick’s Sporting Goods, are shutting their doors on the holiday, a trend that gained momentum during the pandemic. REI is even taking it once step further, closing on Turkey Day and Black Friday.

In a survey by shopping rewards app Shopkick, 70% of respondents expressed support retailers for closing their doors on Thanksgiving Day. However, 23% still plan to shop on the day, and 60% of those will shop in-store.
