Regional grocer to debut new store concept

Schnucks EatWell store

Schnucks Markets is entering the specialty grocery market.

The St.Louis-based retailer will unveil a new format, EatWell, A Natural Food Store by Schnucks, on June 24, in Columbia, Mo. The 42,000-sq.ft. store targets customers  who prioritize health and wellness, natural foods and the “occasional splurge.” (The location was formerly a Lucky’s Market before Schnucks purchased it during a bankruptcy auction earlier this year and went on to extensively remodel it.)

In addition to natural food items, EatWell will also include a focus on organic and local products, and feature a natural living department in which employees can assist customers with choosing options that fit a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

Other features include full-service sushi and ramen bars, open for lunch and dinner, and an on-site barista. Customers can enjoy a local draft beer, root beer, kombucha, a glass of wine or a variety of beverages as they shop.

“Our mission as a company is to nourish people’s lives and we’re excited to be able to build on that mission by launching a store where it’s easy to make healthier choices, while still also being able to pick up a few decadent treats for those special occasions that may be worth the extra calories.” said Schnucks chairman and CEO Todd Schnuck.

Schnucks Market is a third-generation, family-owned grocer that operates 112 stores, serving customers in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Iowa.
