Mall of America first: A holiday ice rink

One would have imagined that Mall of America, the paradigm of retail experience in America, would have done a Christmas ice skating rink years ago, but the 12,000-sq.-ft. Skate The Star attraction opening on Dec. 8 at the mall's north entrance will be a first.

Minnesota Ice is constructing the rink, which will employ 18,000 gallons of water.

“An ice rink has been an experience we have always wanted to bring to life for our guests who visit Mall of America during this cherished time of year. That is why adding this ice rink is such an exciting addition to our holiday lineup.” said Jill Renslow, MOA’s senior VP of business development.

The rink the will be free to the public and remain open through Jan. 27. Skate rentals will be available for $5 with 100% of the proceeds going to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities. The money will help the organization provide activities and support to more than 9,000 young people in kindergarten through graduation from high school.

Other holiday attractions at the mall include photos with Santa in "Santa Land" and a Holiday Music Festival.
