Q&A: Black Sheep Coffee eyes major U.S. expansion
A U.K.-based coffee chain is beginning its expansion across the pond.
Founded in London in 2013 by college roommates, Black Sheep Coffee operates more than 120 locations in the U.K. and is now opening its first stores in the United States. Currently operating four locations in Florida and Texas, the chain is touting significant franchise growth, including a 100-unit deal, over the past 12 months.
To learn more about Black Sheep Coffee’s U.S. growth strategy and what sets the chain apart from others, Chain Store Age spoke with the brand’s co-founders Gabriel Shohet and Eirik Holth.
What sets Black Sheep apart from other chains in the crowded coffee category?
We have a distinct coffee menu as we pioneered 100% Robusta espresso beans in a market dominated by Arabica. Our Robusta Revival beans give a smooth brew with less acidity, more caffeine, and taste notes of hazelnuts and dark chocolate. Our customers also love our Norwegian waffles and our ceremonial-grade matcha range from Japan.
It’s good to look over your shoulder a little bit to see what competitors are doing, but generally speaking, it’s more important to look straight ahead and stay focused on what you’re trying to achieve. We are aiming for better product quality, better speed of service, better customer experience, better tech, and a better vibe. Over time you will win the hearts and minds of the communities where you open shops and competition won’t be something you think much about.
What types of markets will Black Sheep be targeting for future U.S. expansion?
We opened our first U.S. locations in Texas, with shops now operating in Dallas, Plano and Grapevine in the Dallas-Forth Worth area, followed by our first Florida location in Miami. Before the end of this year, we have two more openings in Texas planned, in Little Elm and Austin, and we have a pipeline of additional planned openings across Texas and Florida for next year. We are targeting dynamic rapidly growing markets across the Sun Belt today.
What types of spaces (square footage, accessibility, etc.) is the brand seeking?
We look for spaces that allow us to bring the full Black Sheep Coffee experience to life. Our stores typically range from compact drive-thru models to larger café formats of about 1,500 to 2,500 square feet. Each location is designed to balance convenience with atmosphere, giving customers the same great experience whether they are grabbing a quick coffee or staying to relax or work.

How many locations does Black Sheep see room for in the U.S.?
We are in our early days and we are focused on establishing our first markets today, but the U.S. represents an enormous opportunity with thousands of potential future locations.
