Peapod Digital Labs launches native mobile app for Ahold banners

The digital, e-commerce and commercial company of Ahold Delhaize USA is providing an upgraded mobile shopping experience across Ahold’s grocery brands.

Peapod Digital Labs released a native mobile application for Ahold Delhaize USA’s banners on its proprietary PRISM platform earlier in 2023. So far, the Stop & Shop, Food Lion, Giant Food and The Giant Company brands have gone live on the updated app.

Previously, the mobile app for each Ahold Delhaize USA brand was a web experience customized for mobile use. The new app is built in the native code languages of mobile operating systems, with the goal of increasing speed and overall performance.

To develop this improved mobile shopping experience, Peapod first performed data analysis of the previous app experience. This effort included conducting customer interviews and user research to help modernize the new app’s design.

In addition, Peapod used its data analysis findings to reorganize app features in a way that streamlines the mobile shopping experience and surfaces the most useful content, such as bringing store coupons to app homepages.

The new mobile app was developed to simplify the processes for customers to place, track and modify their delivery and in-store pickup orders, as well as enable the reordering of items from past purchases. It also provides personalized recommendations based on user shopping behavior and history.

In addition, customers can use the app to clip digital coupons and add them to their loyalty card, which is now accessible through Apple or Google wallets. While shopping in a brick-and-mortar location, users can activate an in-store mode to perform activities such as scanning, payment and placing deli orders.

“This is a significant achievement in improving the omnichannel shopping experiences of customers for the brands of Ahold Delhaize USA,” said Mahesh Sahni, director of mobile product for Peapod Digital Labs. “This new mobile app is built on a modern platform enabling the PRISM brands to better connect customers with the products they need, and ushers us into the next evolution of mobile shopping.”

"Efficiency wasn’t the only priority,” said Paul Yang, director of mobile engineering at Peapod Digital Labs. “It’s also our aim to create a more modern interface with aesthetic representative of each of the brands, complete with animations to bring moments of delight into what is typically a transactional experience.”

Peapod Digital Labs (PDL) is the digital, e-commerce and commercial engine of grocery retail group Ahold Delhaize USA. PDL serves as the innovation lab for the U.S. grocery chains Food Lion, Giant Food, The Giant Company, Hannaford and Stop & Shop.
