Outerwear brand Marfa Stance to expand brick-and-mortar footprint — here's where

An international outwear brand is making its debut in the Midwest.

London-based Marfa Stance will open its newest retail location at the open-air Plaza del Lago luxury shopping center in Wilmette, Ill., on Sept. 8. The Chicagoland location will mark the brand’s second permanent location, joining its London store. According to its website, additional Marfa Stance stores are “coming soon” to New York City, Montecito, Calif., and London.

"Chicago’s North Shore has long been a community that embraces both design and quality, the kind of customer who chooses pieces meant to be cherished for years,” said Georgia Dant, who founded Marfa Stance in 2019. “That longevity is at the heart of everything we make, and it felt like a natural home for Marfa Stance. We’re excited to bring our world to Plaza del Lago and to connect with both existing customers and those discovering the brand for the first time."

At the Plaza del Lago store, customers will have the opportunity to explore the Marfa Stance’s signature modular system firsthand, including “responsibly-crafted” jackets, liners, collars, accessories, and ready-to-wear pieces designed to be “layered, adapted and worn across seasons.”

The location will also carry the brand’s recently-launched men’s collection, as well as the Marfa Mini collection for children ages three to 10, which was available online but never before carried in a physical store.

"Georgia Dant is one of those rare designers who starts with a brilliant idea and stays committed to it even while she expands and builds upon it," said Samantha David, president of WS Development, which purchased Plaza del Lago in 2022. "The story of Marfa Stance begins with Donald Judd and the fundamental premise that things should be built to last, to adapt, to be loved for years. That philosophy feels completely at home at Plaza del Lago, where it had been loved for a century before we arrived and where we have always believed that what we build here should be worthy of this community for another century to come.”

Originally built in the 1920s, Plaza del Lago’s open-air, lakefront property encompasses approximately 100,000 square feet of space. Its tenants include Veronica Beard, Rag & Bone, James Perse, LoveShackFancy, Thom Browne and more.
