Trump wants to raise postal services prices—because of Amazon

12/29/2017
President Donald Trump is criticizing Amazon — again.

President Trump is blaming Amazon’s lower delivery charges for taking a toll on the U.S. Postal Office’s operating losses. To fight back, the President wants the agency to raise prices of shipments in order to recoup costs.

According to a tweet by the President, “Why is the United States Post Office, which is losing many billions of dollars a year, while charging Amazon and others so little to deliver their packages, making Amazon richer and the Post Office dumber and poorer? Should be charging MUCH MORE!”

The Post Office has lost money for 11 straight years, mostly because of pension and healthcare costs, according to the Associated Press. While online shopping has led to growth in its package-delivery business, that hasn't offset declines in first-class mail.

The tweet follows President Trump’s ongoing criticism of Amazon and of The Washington Post, which is owned by Jeff Bezos.
