Report: Wal-Mart wants accurate labels

7/29/2015

Bentonville, Ark. – Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is reportedly making sure its suppliers understand expectations for labeling of products.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the retailer recently sent a memo to hundreds of suppliers, including major CPG firms such as Kraft Heinz Co. and Nestle, reminding them that the amount of an item inside a package must match the amount stated on the outside label.

The memo comes in the wake of Whole Foods Market Inc. facing accusations of selling products with misleading labels. It is also part of a larger general trend of Wal-Mart pressuring suppliers to take certain steps. Earlier this year, Wal-Mart told suppliers they needed to control their costs so Wal-Mart could pass savings along to customers, and even recommended that suppliers reduce their marketing spending.
