NRF supports data breach legislation

4/15/2015

Washington, D.C. – The National Retail Federation (NRF) is publicly supporting the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s consideration of the Data Security and Breach Notification Act. In a public statement, Mallory Duncan, senior VP and general counsel NRF, said strong tools are needed to combat criminal breaches.

“Throughout this process, it has been our goal to work toward legislation that advances and strengthens consumer protections and incentivizes businesses to safeguard sensitive data,” said Duncan. “In order to be successful, data breach legislation must secure a single national standard and match any penalties to obligations so as avoid adverse effects on small and medium-sized businesses attempting to deal with the scourge of criminal hacks.”

In the statement, Duncan also said legislation should ensure public notice when breaches occur.
