  • Survey: Fewer people applying for retail jobs

    Chemsford, Mass. -- Fewer people applied for jobs in the retail sector in June, according to the July Kronos Retail Labor Index.  The July report includes data for June 2011.

    The number of applications received by retailers in the Kronos sample fell sharply in June 2011, to just 900,164 from a revised 1,149,879 in May, all on a seasonally adjusted basis. This was the lowest number of applications received since November 2007 and nearly 17%  below its level one year ago. 

  • Walmart to build new supercenter in Maryland

    Denton, Md. -- Walmart will break ground on a new supercenter in Denton, Maryland, the week of September 19. The 152,888-sq.-ft.  store will also feature a Subway.

    Walmart currently operates 35 stores and 12 Sam's Clubs in the state of Maryland.

  • Report: Liz Claiborne in talks to sell Mexx

    New York — Liz Claiborne Inc. is looking to sell its Mexx apparel brand to a private-equity firm, according to Bloomberg. Leonard Green & Partners, Sun Capital and Golden Gate Capital are among the firms that have shown an interested in Mexx, the report said.

    Final bids are due within a few weeks with a sale expected to be completed in September, Bloomberg said.

  • President of Build-A-Bear Workshop to retire

    New York — John Haugh announced that he plans to retire as president of Build-A-Bear Workshop Inc., effective July 22, according to a company filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

    A successor has not yet been named.

  • Gordon Brothers names new CEO

    Boston -- Gordon Brothers Group announced that Gary M. Talarico joined the firm as president and CEO reporting to the Board of Directors. Michael Frieze will assume the role of chairman, board of directors. 

    Prior to joining Gordon Brothers Group, Talarico he was managing partner of Cora Street Partners, an advisory boutique. From 2004 to 2009, he was a managing director of Sun Capital Partners.

  • Naartjie Kids expands into Middle East

    Saudi Arabia — Children’s retailer Naartjie Kids said Thursday it opened its first Saudi Arabia flagship store on July 9 in the Riyadh Gallery Mall.  The company said six additional Saudi Arabia stores are slated to open this month.

  • Office Depot names president of newly combined North America division

    Boca Raton, Fla. — Office Depot Inc. announced Wednesday that it has appointed Kevin Peters as president, North America, a new position that combines the company’s previous North American Retail and North American Business Solutions divisions.

    Peters was previously president of North American Retail.

  • Alliance Data signs long-term renewal agreement with The RoomPlace

    Dallas< — Alliance Data Systems Corporation  announced it has signed a long-term renewal agreement to continue providing private label credit card services for The RoomPlace.

    Under terms of the agreement, Alliance Data will continue providing The RoomPlace with private label credit card services, including account acquisition and activation; receivables funding; card authorization; private label credit card issuance; statement generation; remittance processing; customer service functions; and marketing services.
