An online-only grocery store that sells heavily discounted shelf-stable items is expanding its digital footprint.

Martie has gone live in Texas. The California-based company which launched in late 2021, works with top brands and producers to shop their ever-changing supply of surplus pantry goods — focusing primarily items that would otherwise be thrown out due to overstock, package changing, or seasonality — and sells them online directly to consumers at up to 70% off retail. The company is a preferred partner to national brands such as KIND, Kellogg’s, Quaker, and Annie’s Homegrown on their surplus and overstock inventory.

The merchandise, which includes shelf-stable pantry goods, cooking essentials and household items,  is delivered directly to shoppers’ door, with no subscription or membership necessary, within one to two days. Consumers can go to the website, pick the items they want and check out.

Shoppers save on average $54 per order or $600 per year, with 45% of customers returning month over month, according to the company.

In addition to Texas, Martie currently ships to shoppers in California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.  It plans to expand nationwide by the end of 2020.

In line with its expansion, Martie has opened a 38,000-sq-ft. warehouse in Dallas, which will serve as its nationwide shipping center.

“Martie is the first online grocery store designed to save shoppers money while simultaneously helping the environment,” said co-founder Louise Fritjofsson. “We’re very excited to have launched in Texas, a strategically important market for us as we continue our expansion from the West Coast towards the East.”

Since it launched, Martie said it has saved more than 1 million pounds of food from going to the landfill and saved shoppers more than $2 million.

The company offers more than 800 SKUs, with a range of shelf-stable items that include pastas and pasta sauces, rice and beans, coffees and teas, cooking oils, and snacks, along with a well stocked selection of organic and gluten-free options.
