    The marketing team at Jack Link’s Beef Jerky has outdone themselves with a clever and lighthearted brand-building effort that plays off the presidential election. The company is asking consumers to vote for their favorite “meathead,” a two-foot-by-three-foot likeness of president Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney made from various types of jerky.

  • Express Q2 income up 25%; to open flagships in Times Square and San Francisco

    Columbus, Ohio -- Express Inc. reported a 25% increase in net income for the second quarter. But the retailer slashed its profit outlook for the year and said that same-store sales barely rose last quarter and that it expects about the same for the rest of the year.

    Express earned $15.8 million for the quarter ended July 28, better than analysts expected, compared with $12.6 million in the year-ago period.

    Revenue increased 2% to $454.9 million, short of the $467 million analysts had expected. Same-store sales inched up 1%.

  • AEO raises outlook on record sales growth

    PITTSBURGH — American Eagle Outfitters' income from continuing operations increased 62% to 21 cents per diluted share for the second quarter, compared with 13 cents per diluted share for the comparable quarter last year. Net income for the second quarter, which includes a loss from discontinued operations, was 9 cents per diluted share, compared with 10 cents per diluted share last year.

  • Report: Rona dealers critical of Lowe’s offer

    New York -- A group of Rona Inc.'s dealers on Wednesday released an open letter on Wednesday that criticized the proposed takeover of the Canadian home-improvement retailer and distributor by Lowe’s Cos., Reuters reported.

    The letter, which was addressed to Lowe's CEO Robert Niblock, was signed by merchants that operate 164 affiliate or franchise Rona stores.

  • Wet Seal hires financial advisors; adopts poison pill

    Foothill Ranch, Calif. -- The Wet Seal said it has hired financial advisors and adopted a poison pill that discourages an investor from acquiring 10% of the company.

    The move comes as Clinton Group, an investor with a 3.9% stake in the chain, has been putting pressure on the company to put itself on the block.

    “We took this action to ensure the board has sufficient time to consider any option,” said Wet Seal chairman Harold Kahn.

    NEW YORK — Uniqlo has introduced a new tennis line modeled after the performance apparel worn by top-ranked male professional tennis playe, Novak Djokovic. The line will launch in the United States on Aug. 27 and in other markets around the world at a later date, details of which will be announced in due course.

  • RILA announces opposition to ‘flawed’ proposed swipe fee settlement

    Arlington, Va. -- The Retail Industry Leaders Association criticized the proposed swipe fee settlement and urged class plaintiffs to reject the proposal. Announced in July, the proposed settlement stems from lawsuits challenging the anticompetitive swipe fee practices of Visa and MasterCard.
