  • Judge allows lawsuit vs. Target to continue

    A federal judge has ruled that customers suing Target for last year’s data breach may move forward with their claims.

    U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson in St. Paul, Minn., dismissed claims by plaintiffs in certain states but largely denied Target's request to toss out the proposed class action lawsuit.

    Magnuson rejected Target's argument that the consumers lacked standing to sue because they could not establish any injury.

  • Small food retailer eyes big-time growth

    Little known food retailer Haggen Northwest Fresh will grow its store base more than 800% following a Federal Trade Commission mandate that Albertson’s and Safeway divest 168 stores.

    Few people have heard of Haggen outside Washington and Oregon, where the company operates 18 stores, but now the food retailer is about to get dramatically bigger and expand its presence to three more western states.

  • Safeway scores 100% on Corporate Equality Index

    PLEASANTON, Calif. - For the second year in a row, Safeway Inc. has received a perfect score of 100% on the Corporate Equality Index (CEI), a national benchmarking survey and report on corporate policies and practices pertinent to LGBT equality, administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.  
  • Office Depot gets contracts valued at $400M

    Office Depot has been awarded two contracts valued in excess of $400 million.

    The retailer will be partnering with Region 4 Education Service Center and TCPN, which offers cooperative contract solutions to K-12 schools, local governments, colleges and universities. The new agreements with Office Depot include office and school supplies, furniture, technology products and copy and print services provided at significant discounts and savings to eligible public agency customers.

  • Albertson’s and Safeway to sell 146 stores to Haggen

    Boise, Idaho – As part of divestures to receive FTC clearance of their proposed January 2015 merger, AB Acquisitions Inc. (Albertsons) and Safeway Inc. will sell 146 stores to Pacific Northwest grocery chain Haggen. With this acquisition, which remains subject to FTC approval, Haggen will expand from 18 stores with 16 pharmacies to 164 stores with 106 pharmacies.  
  • Millennials more likely to impulse-shop

    The urge to impulse-shop during the holidays runs strong among Americans, but even stronger among a particular age group, according to a new survey.

    About 83% of Millennials admit to having made an impulse purchase in the past, according to the Chase Blueprint Holiday Impulse Purchases Survey. And when they shop online or on pay day, this urge exceeds that of all other age groups.

  • Walgreens to exit NYSE for Nasdaq

    Deerfield, Ill. - Walgreen Co. intends to apply to list the shares of Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. common stock on The Nasdaq Stock Market under the ticker symbol “WBA” following the closing of its merger with UK-based pharmacy retailer Alliance Boots. The company will voluntarily withdraw its common stock from listing on both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Chicago Stock Exchange (CHX).  
  • U.K. retailer Poundworld launching IT overhaul with PCMS

    Normanton, U.K. – U.K.-based discount retailer Poundworld is embarking on an IT overhaul with global retail IT services provider PCMS to support its long-term growth plans. The 10-month project will see Poundworld implement a range of new IT systems to improve customer experience, efficiency and store management.
