Wal-Mart testing $10 mail-order Rx program

Bentonville, Ark. Wal-Mart Stores is once again shaking up the retail pharmacy landscape. The chain announced Tuesday it has rolled out a statewide pilot program in Michigan offering a 90-day supply of 300 generic prescriptions, for $10 each, via free mail delivery.

With this latest initiative, Wal-Mart is entering a space that had primarily been the realm of pharmacy benefit managers, such as the giant Medco Health Solutions, which encourage customers to use 90-day prescriptions, with the drugs delivered by mail.

Wal-Mart said the new program would have no membership or enrollment fees. In addition to the 300 common generic prescriptions available for $10 each per 90-day order, Wal-Mart’s latest drug program provides access to more than 3,000 other brand and generic prescriptions for higher prices.

The new initiative builds on Wal-Mart’s $4 generic prescription program. Introduced in 2006, the program has saved customers more than $2 billion dollars on their prescriptions, including more than $43 million in Michigan, according to the chain.
