Wal-Mart May Change Big-Box Image at New York City Store

7/18/2005

Brooklyn, N.Y., Wal-Mart is so interested in opening a store in New York City that it is willing to change its big-box-store image there. Mia Masten, communications director of Wal-Mart, told the Brooklyn Papers newspaper, “If we can’t have it on a single story, we can do a tiered structure. There isn’t an urban prototype per se, but it would have to be feasible for an urban market.”

Wal-Mart had a deal to build a store in Rego Park, Queens that fell through earlier this year. Now the company is looking at Brooklyn and other locations in the city. Masten said a telephone survey concluded that 67% of those living in Brooklyn would support a Wal-Mart in the borough.
