Wal-Mart Adds Home Furnishings Brand

3/4/2008

Bentonville, Ark. In effort to get lagging home decor sales in check, Wal-Mart Stores said Tuesday that it is rolling out a new home furnishings brand in stores and online.

The new line, called Canopy, will include bedding, furniture, bath accessories and dinnerware, is designed for budget-wise customers. Prices will be up to 40% below those of competitors, the chain said. Merchandise is now available in select stores and on its Web site.

Even though the retailer has tried to appeal to wealthier shoppers by featuring more upscale merchandise, including high thread-count sheets, Wal-Mart’s home category has struggled in recent years. In addition to the Canopy brand, Wal-Mart plans to launch a new line of Better Homes and Gardens products this fall.
