Target makes changes to corporate donation policy

2/17/2011

New York City -- Target Corp. has updated its corporate donation policy following a corporate review that occurred in the wake of the backlash surrounding the company’s $150,000 donation last summer to a group that ran ads supporting Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, according to the Minneapolis/St.Paul Buisness Journal. The donation resulted in much controversy for the chain due to Emmer’s anti same-sex marriage stand.

The changes include the creation of a new policy committee comprised of senior executives to “guide the decision-making process regarding financial support of political activities,” the report said. The new board reports to the Target board of directors’ Corporate Responsibility Committee.

Target says the new policy is designed to boost transparency, while better aligning its public-policy activities with its business interests, the report said.
