Stop & Shop raises $400K for hunger relief

9/20/2012

QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop customers and associates helped abate hunger by donating nearly $400,000 through the company’s first ever Healthy Ideas Food for Friends program. As part of the company’s hunger relief efforts, Stop & Shop will donate 100% of the funds to regional hunger relief agencies across the Northeast.

“Healthy Ideas Food for Friends was designed to bring relief during a time when many are not thinking about hunger,” said Joe Kelley, president of Stop & Shop’s New England division. “We are grateful for our customers’ unending generosity. This program will make a difference in thousands of lives, bringing healthy and more nutritious meals to those in need.”

The storewide effort kicked-off on Aug. 3 and ran through Aug. 26. Customers contributed in-store donations of $1, $3 or $5 at checkout registers. Sixty percent of the funds raised, approximately $239,200, will be donated to hundreds of local hunger relief agencies each store adopts. Fourty percent of the funds, approximately $159,400, will be donated to seven regional food banks.
