Chicago Total U.S. foot traffic in stores increased 3.3% in May compared with April 2010, according to ShopperTrak Corp.’s Retail Traffic Index (SRTI).
The index reported a 3.3% traffic increase, while the company’s National Retail Sales Estimate reported a steady 7.9% rise. The 2010 calendar shift also strongly influenced month-over-month performance as April 2010 did not contain Easter holiday traffic, equaling a slower month.

Each month, the SRTI measures traffic across five separate retail segments: total U.S. traffic (combines enclosed malls and retail stores); total retail stores; enclosed malls; apparel and accessories stores; and wireless and consumer electronics stores. Rich with national and regional data, and with traffic measured on a weekly basis, the SRTI reports provide valuable insights into trends and reveals differences in shopper traffic between regions and retail segments.
