Sam’s Club takes ‘shot’ at greater health role

8/15/2013

Flu shots and nine other immunizations will now be offered year round by Sam’s Club pharmacists at more than 560 U.S. locations as the retailer looks to enhance member value and attract new members.

Beginning this month, Sam’s will begin offering flu shots and immunizations for diseases such as pneumonia, shingles, whooping cough, chickenpox, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), meningitis, HPV (human papillomavirus) and hepatitis A and B.

"With the onset of flu season and weather patterns becoming increasingly unpredictable, it's every business's job to plan ahead this year,” said Jill Turner-Mitchael, Sam’s SVP of health and wellness. “At Sam's Club, we're providing easier access to flu shots and immunizations this year so our customers who plan ahead can protect themselves, their colleagues and their bottom line. Preventive action is critical to maintaining business continuity and growth."

The immunizations are available on a walk-in or scheduled appointment basis and since membership is not required to receive immunization the offering has the potential to attract new dues-paying members. Sam’s already has about 47 million members.
