5/8/2008

PLEASANTON, Calif. Ross Stores announced April sales of $480 million for the four weeks ended May 3, an increase of 15% over last year's $417 million. Same-store sales increased 8%.

First quarter net sales increased 10% for the thirteen weeks ended May 3, to $1.56 billion, versus $1.41 billion in 2007. Comparable-store sales for the quarter increased 3% over the prior-year period.

"We are pleased with our healthy sales gains for both April and the first quarter, especially considering the challenging retail environment," stated Michael Balmuth, vice chairman, president and ceo. " ... we believe our solid sales performance throughout the quarter was driven by our ability to continue to offer compelling bargains on fresh and exciting name brand fashions for the family and the home."
