Report: Twitter has big plans for buy button

8/7/2015

San Francisco – Twitter is reportedly planning to expand the pilot of its buy button feature, and not by a small amount. According to Re/code, Twitter is negotiating with e-commerce platforms including Shopify to let potentially hundreds of thousands of retailers and other businesses directly sell goods through links embedded in tweets.

Other social media platforms, including Pinterest and Facebook, have already been working with Shopify to expand the reach of their own buy button features. So far, Twitter’s buy button partnerships have focused on smaller third-party platforms like Fancy and Gumroad.

Initially launched as a small test in September 2014, the Twitter buy button lets users tap the button to get additional product details. They are then prompted to enter shipping and payment information. Once that’s entered and confirmed, order information is sent to the merchant for delivery.
