As Lowe’s prepares to open its previously announced 25 new stores in Canada during the next three years, speculation is mounting that the retailer could snap up some of Target's locations when the company withdraws from the Canadian market later this year.
But Lowe's is not saying whether three new Lowe's stores set to open later this year in Lethbridge, Saskatoon and Sault Ste. Mari will be located in former Target locations.
Target announced on Jan. 15 that it would be closing down its money-losing operations in Canada less than two years after entering the market by acquiring the bulk of the Zellers locations in the country.
Lowe's Canada said it plans to hire approximately 2,000 seasonal employees at its 37 existing stores across Canada, as well as at its three planned stores and regional distribution center in Milton, to support its spring and summer 2015 seasons.
The company will also host its first ever Canadian National Hiring Day on March 7 at all stores. Management teams will be on site ready to accept applications and conduct in-store interviews. Applications can also be submitted online.
Seasonal employees are most needed in spring and summer, typically from March until September, when weather has improved and customers are ramping up their indoor and outdoor home improvement projects. Job roles include customer service associates, cashiers, loaders, stockers, sales specialists, among others.
Lowe’s is also planning to hire 30,000 seasonal associates in its U.S. stores this year.
