Kaufmann’s Settles Suit

1/25/2005

Chicago, Kaufmann’s, a division of May Department Stores, agreed to pay $400,000 to settle a suit involving charges of false sales promotions, the New York Attorney General’s office said. The chain was accused of promoting products as discounted when those items, in many cases, had not sold at their “regular” prices for long periods.

Kaufmann’s also agreed not to advertise or sell any item at “sale” price unless it has “actively and regularly offered the item for sale in the course of its recent business,” New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer said in a press release.
