Dueling designers arrive for spring

1/25/2010

Trend-setting fashionistas in search of cheap chic are in for sensory overload at Target stores this spring, as the retailer prepares to launch an aggressive designer blitz to fulfill its “expect more” proposition. In addition to the recently announced deals with Food Network star Giada De Laurentiis, and the acquisition of the Smith & Hawken brand, the company Target had licensed for the past five years, several new designers will debut online and in store beginning in March.

For starters, a new 50-piece line from designer Jean Paul Gaultier is set to hit more than 400 stores with prices ranging from $18 all the way to $200. Also in March, a new 300-item line of spring fashion essentials and home items from luxury brand Liberty of London will arrive in stores for a nine-week run. Target has also partnered with designer Zac Posen for an apparel collection that will hit stores for five weeks beginning in April. Also in April, a new footwear line designed by Cynthia Vincent will arrive in stores for a 10-week run. Target also plans to offer a limited-edition hat assortment from designer Eugenia Kim for nine weeks beginning in April.

“Long before the economy slide into the current recession, Target made it cool to get more for less, and our partnership for 2010 are among the most impressive we’ve ever had,” said Kathee Tesija, Targets’ EVP merchandising.
