Despite recalls, toy sales reach $22.6 billion

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. Despite the many recalls and other difficult conditions affecting the toy industry this past year, toy sales declined by only 2% in 2007, according to The NPD Group.

The NPD Group reported that U.S. retail sales of toys generated $22.1 billion in 2007 compared to $22.6 billion in 2006. According to NPD sales were strong in action figures and accessories, and vehicles, each experiencing a 6% increase over 2006. 

The worst performing categories were infant/preschool, outdoor and sports toys, and dolls, with respective declines of 5%, 5% and 8%.
