BJ’s club Mastercard raises the bar on rewards

BJ's Wholesale Club has introduced a Mastercard program that ups the ante in the wholesale club credit card category. The My BJ's Perks MasterCard will offer members 10 cents off per gallon of BJ's gas every day, up to 5% back on purchases in-club and at BJs.com, 2% back on eating out and non-BJ's gas purchases, and 1% back on purchases made everywhere else MasterCard is accepted.

The My BJ's Perks Program is also the first in the wholesale club category to provide members the flexibility of on-demand award redemption in $20 increments during checkout in-club.

"Our members [will receive] more benefits, more value and more convenience when they shop in-club and everywhere else MasterCard is accepted," said Laura Sen, president and CEO of BJ's Wholesale Club. "One of my favorite program features is our members' ability to automatically redeem their earnings during checkout. They have the choice to build their awards for greater savings off a bigger purchase or they can put them to use during their weekly shop."

The My BJ's Perks MasterCard will be available to qualifying BJ's Inner Circle, BJ's Business and BJ's Perks Rewards Members in the United States through instant applications in-club or online. The program includes two new MasterCard offerings: BJ's Perk Plus and BJ's Perk Elite. The BJ's Perks Plus credit card has a $50 membership fee and earns members 3% back on most purchases in and outside BJ's. The BJ's Perk Elite credit card has a $100 membership fee and members earn 5% back on most purchases in and outside of BJ's. Both cards also provide:

BJ's Wholesale Club, founded in 1984, competes with much bigger rivals like Costco Wholesale and Sam's Club, a unit of Walmart. Sam’s Club offers a Mastercard program that gives members the opportunity to earn 5% cash back on gas, 3% cash back on dining and travel, and 1% cash back on all other purchases, up to $5,000 annually. Costco’s My TrueEarnings American Express card offers 3% cash back at gas stations, 2% back at restaurants, 2% back on travel and 1% cash back on other purchases.

BJ’s, based in Westborough, Mass., operates 201 warehouse clubs throughout the eastern United States offering roughly 7,000 items.
