  • iParty loss widens in Q1

    Dedham, Mass. -- Party goods retailer iParty Corp. reported Wednesday a loss of $1.51 million in the quarter ended March 26, compared with a loss of $1.49 million in the year-ago period.

    Revenues for the quarter edged up 1.7% to $15.1 million. Same-store sales dipped 1.1%.

    iParty Corp. operates 53 iParty retail stores in New England and Florida.

  • Children's Place email database hacked

    Secaucus, N.J. -- The Children's Place Retail Stores said Tuesday that its customer email address database, which is stored at an external email service provider, was accessed by an unauthorized third party.

    According to the provider, email addresses were accessed and no other personal information was obtained.

    The Children's Place said it is notifying its customers and has launched an investigation.
     

  • Despite store openings, Fresh & Easy reports $300 million loss

    EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Supermarket retailer Fresh & Easy, which operates stores in California, Arizona and Nevada, experienced increased losses this year, according to parent company Tesco.

    The chain, which opened its doors in 2007 and has expanded its reach to include more than 165 stores to date, endured a loss of more than $300 million, during the 2010-2011 financial year ended Feb. 26, its parent company reported on Tuesday.

  • Tesco annual profit up, losses continue at Fresh & Easy

    New York City -- Tesco PLC said Tuesday that its profit rose 14% to $4.3 billion in its most recent fiscal year ending Feb.26, while annual group sales increased 8% to almost $106 billion. However, losses continued to mount at its U.S. division, Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, which lost about $302.6 million. The division, which opened its first stores in 2007, now has 172 locations. It has yet to post a profit.

    Tesco remains committed to Fresh & Easy, and said it is ramping up expansion, with about 50 stores on tap for this year.

  • Vitamin Shoppe enjoys healthy growth trajectory

    The recent opening of the 500th Vitamin Shoppe store was heralded as an important milestone for this rapidly growing company but within a few years the nation’s second largest nutritional products specialty retailer could be eyeing 1,000 units.

    “There are many markets we are interested in establishing a presence in, and we will continue to move forward with our growth plans to expand in current markets and penetrate new ones,” Vitamin Shoppe CEO Tony Truesdale said on the occasion of the opening of the 500th store in St. Peters, Mo., earlier this month.

  • New York Metro McDonald's launches hiring push on April 19

    Roseland, N.J. -- McDonald's New York Tri-State Area and its franchisees said Tuesday they are looking to hire new crew and restaurant management positions in more than 600 restaurant locations throughout the area on April 19.

    The one-day event is part of a nationwide initiative for McDonald's and its franchisees with a target to hire up to 50,000 new employees at restaurants across the country.  

  • Ill. governor tours nearby green Walgreens

    DEERFIELD, Ill. — As part of Earth Month in Illinois, Gov. Patrick Quinn Tuesday morning toured a Walgreens drug store in Oak Park, Ill., that features the first geothermal energy system used in a chain drug store in the country, Walgreens stated in a release.

    The system, which went live when the store opened last October, has reduced the store's expected energy usage by 60%.
