  • Bankrupt A&P receives financing, bids; will close 25 stores

    Montvale, N.J. – So far, chapter 11 bankruptcy appears to be going as planned for The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P). A&P has received approval for financing from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court of the Southern District of New York, bids for some stores, and will close 25 stores in the near term due to “lack of interest” and ongoing losses.

  • Bon-Ton Stores names retail vet as COO

    Bon-Ton Stores has hired a 30-year veteran of the retail industry as its chief operating officer.

    The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. has named William Tracy to the position of COO, effective July 27. Tracy will have responsibility for stores, information systems, supply chain, distribution & logistics, omnichannel strategy, real estate, and HR.

  • Character is key for back-to-school shoppers

    Austin, Texas – Parents are always telling their school-aged children that character is key, and they also apply a version of that maxim to back-to-school shopping. According to a recent survey by RetailMeNot, parents say their kids want school supplies featuring popular characters from films and TV shows.

    Respondents indicated their children want "Minions"-themed school supplies the most (33%) followed by "Jurassic World" (31%), "SpongeBob" (24%) and "Star Wars" (22%).

  • Gymboree colors the world for kids

    Gymboree is launching a colorful new campaign aimed at increasing awareness of a cause near and dear to the heart of its core customers.

    The retailer has started a new effort to raise money in Gymboree and Gymboree Outlet stores to fund arts and crafts requests made by teachers on DonorsChoose.org. The goal is to fulfill classroom requests in every county where there is a Gymboree retail location.

  • Tyco Retail acquires FootFall

    Neuhausen, Switzerland - Tyco Retail Solutions, the retail performance and security business of Tyco, has acquired U.K.-based retail intelligence technology provider FootFall for $560 million in cash. FootFall provides end-to-end technology, services and retail analytics solutions to collect, measure, and analyze customer traffic in their stores and property portfolios.

  • Tile Shop profit meets, revenue beats Street in Q2; plans new stores

    Plymouth Minn. – Tile Shop Holdings Inc. had a successful second quarter of fiscal 2015, meeting Wall Street expectations for profit and beating them for revenue. Net income rose 20% to $4.8 million from $4 million the same period a year earlier, with higher pretax income compensation for increased expenses related to the opening of 12 new stores.
