Meijer makes in-store pickup more accessible

Meijer now lets customers pick up online orders at all stores, and membership is not required.

The regional Midwestern grocer is expanding access to its Meijer Pickup option, initially introduced in October 2018, as part of an initiative to provide customers multiple ways to conveniently and safely shop its stores for the holidays. In October 2019, Meijer implemented the Dematic microfulfillment solution to optimize the picking of goods in-store or from nearby fulfillment centers for delivery or customer pickup of online orders.

The new version of the program, which is free on orders over $50, does not require membership, and offers the same pricing as in-store and access to weekly sales items. Customers can place orders via phone or desktop and have a Meijer associate personally hand-select items which are available for pickup within a few hours.

Meijer Pickup provides access to more than 100,000 items online, including grocery, general merchandise, toys, electronics, beauty care, and houseware items. The company is in the process of enhancing its capacity for expected increase in orders during the holidays by hiring 10-15 associates at each store.

Meijer Pickup also allows customers to keep track of their total basket, use the retailer’s mPerks rewards and coupons, note any preferences, and choose an available time for pickup. Customers text when they arrive a store and park in assigned area near the store. Due to reduced hours during the COVID-19 pandemic, the service is available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week.

"This is the latest of our efforts to adapt our digital services to help customers manage their lives during the pandemic and further enhance the experience of shopping at Meijer," said Derek Steele, VP of customer strategy. "We believe the personalized service, coupled with the freshness and wide selection our stores offer, provides the digital solution so many of our customers are looking for during these challenging times."

Based in Grand Rapids, Mich., Meijer operates 253 supercenters and grocery stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and Wisconsin.
