  • Asda promotes CFO to COO

    LONDON  — Asda announced last week that Judith McKenna, the company's current finance director, is to take the reins as the retailer’s COO, effective September.

    Judith, who joined Asda more than 15 years ago, has led Asda’s finance functions as CFO since 2001.

    As COO she will take on leadership of all Asda’s retail operations, including its stores, distribution network and IT systems.

  • Saks to open department store in Kazakhstan

    New York City -- Saks said Tuesday it will open a licensed Saks Fifth Avenue store in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in August 2012.

    The full-line department store, which will tailor its merchandise to the region, will open in Esentai Shopping Mall, which is part of a new mixed-use development featuring residential, office and hospitality components.

    The three-story, 91,000-sq.-ft. store will showcase a three-story-high, state-of-the-art digital video screen on the building’s facade. 

  • Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange deploys RFID solution from EIS

    Dallas -- Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange said Tuesday it has deployed a radio-frequency identification inventory management solution from Electronic Inventory Solutions in its showroom stores in Texas, California, and South Carolina, for the dual purposes of automating the inventory count process and adding additional physical security.

  • Duane Reade heads to Wall Street for latest flagship

    NEW YORK — Duane Reade, which is owned by Walgreens, is opening on July 6 its 22,000-sq.-ft. flagship store that has a decided “up market focus” with exclusive services and amenities never seen before in a Duane Reade or any other drug store.

    The innovative 24-hour store is located at 40 Wall St., which is known as the "Crown Jewel of Wall Street" and once held the title of the tallest building in the world.

  • Applebee’s to open at CooperTowne Center

    Somerdale, N.J. -- Purchase, N.Y.-based National Realty & Development Corp. said Tuesday that Applebee’s will open a new restaurant at the 385,000-sq.-ft. CooperTowne Center in Somerdale, N.J.

    Applebee’s will occupy 7,029 sq. ft. of this redevelopment project and will join anchor tenants Walmart Supercenter, Cinemark Theatres and LA Fitness.

  • Nike opens concept store at Forum Shops

    Las Vegas -- Nike announced Thursday that its new 30,000-sq.-ft. concept store, an expanded iteration of the original, will open in July at The Forum Shops at Caesars, in Las Vegas.

    The expanded location will deliver new customer experiences, market-tailored products, community resources and the introduction of team customization services, according to Nike.

  • Duane Reade wins IBM Retail User Group’s Retail Innovation Award

    Strongsville, Ohio -- The IBM Retail User Group announced Thursday that drugstore retailer Duane Reade is the winner of its 2011 Retail Innovation Award.

    The award, which was accepted by Richard Gilbert, director of store systems for Duane Reade, was presented at the User Group’s 34th annual conference in Orlando, Fla., in May.

    The innovative solution provider Retail Tech jointly with RTC Group and Agilysys were also honored with the 2011 Retail Solution Innovation Award.
