  • Target Canada openings confirmed

    Minneapolis -- Target on Thursday confirmed the list of the stores that it intends to open across Canada in 2013.

    As previously reported, Target purchased the leasehold interests of 189 sites currently operated by Zellers, and is slated to open 125 to 135 stores in Canada, the majority of which will open in 2013.

    The latest announcement confirms the first 125 stores that will open in 2013, and later this year, Target will confirm additional store locations that will open starting in early 2014 and beyond.

  • GE Lighting rolls out new lighting program at 7,000 Walgreens

    East Cleveland, Ohio -- Walgreens recently upgraded its general lighting across 80% of the chain's nationwide locations, through a partnership with GE Lighting.

    As part of its new lighting initiative, Walgreens said it has changed its lights to the new GE F25 T8 linear fluorescent tubes, which is designed to save thousands of dollars as it impacts more than 4.3 million lights at nearly 7,000 stores. Additionally, the new linear fluorescent fixtures from GE Lighting are expected to increase energy efficiency by 9% and extend re-lamp cycles by 10%.

  • Alco names SVP marketing

    ABILENE, Kan. — Alco Stores has promoted Brent Streit to SVP marketing and e-commerce.

    Streit, a native of Downs, Kansas and a graduate of Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing, has more than 20 years of experience in retailing. In 2001 he joined Alco, then known as Duckwall-ALCO Stores Inc., as a buyer. Since then he has held increasingly responsible positions in supply chain management, marketing and business development.

  • Visionworks to open 17 stores in Philadelphia market by end of 2012

    Philadelphia -- Visionworks, the largest wholly owned U.S.-based optical retailer, has opened its first store in the Philadelphia area. Located in Deptford Township, N.J., it is the first of more than 25 stores expected to open in the market through 2013.

    The San Antonio-based retailer plans to open 17 stores before the end of 2012 and additional locations by April 2013.

  • LA Fitness to open at Old Town Shopping Center

    Dallas -- Venture Commercial said that LA Fitness has signed a long-term lease to build a 45,000-sq.-ft. facility in the Old Town Shopping Center in Dallas, on the site of a former Borders bookstore.

    LA Fitness has begun razing the existing building on behalf of the landlord, preparing the site for construction of a new prototype club, which is expected to open around the end of the year.

  • Starbucks expands mobile payment footprint globally

    Seattle -- Starbucks Coffee Co. announced the continued global expansion of the Starbucks mobile platform with the roll-out of Starbucks app for Android to the United Kingdom and Canada.

    In addition, U.S. customers who download or update to the official Starbucks app for Android will be able to experience new enhancements including a widget, PayPal support, PIN code protection, and viewing the My Starbucks Rewards history dashboard.

  • Alliance Data signs multi-year renewal agreement with Gordmans

    Dallas – Loyalty and marketing solution-provider Alliance Data Systems Corp. said Tuesday that it has signed a multi-year renewal agreement to continue providing the private label credit card program for Omaha-Neb.-based Gordmans Stores, which operates 78 stores in 46 markets across 18 states.

    Additionally, Gordmans and Alliance Data have begun a full rollout of Alliance Data's in-store, tablet-based mobile technology to drive account acquisition efforts following a successful pilot earlier in 2012.
