    Retailers looking to add sparkle to this year’s Christmas season may want to take a new look at their gift card programs. Last year, more than half of consumers bought at least one gift card for the holidays, according to a report from First Data Corp., an Atlanta-based e-commerce processor.

    Indeed, consumers seem to be taking more of a shine than ever to these types of spending vehicles.

    Foot Locker is kicking up its heels in the United Kingdom. The footwear giant has opened a new format — The Locker Room — with an eye to rolling it out throughout England and continental Europe.   • Target profit flat in Q2; raises outlook

    Minneapolis -- Target Corp. reported Wednesday that profit for the second quarter remained essentially flat at $704 million.

    Sales advanced 3.5% to $16.45 million, boosted by a 3.1% same-store sales rise in the quarter but missed Wall Street’s expected $16.75 million in revenue.

  • AutoZone achieves major milestone

    Friday promises to be a big day in Wasilla, Alaska, as the town receives the distinction of being the location of the 5,000th AutoZone store.

    A presentation and ribbon cutting ceremony to be held Friday afternoon will be attended by U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), and Wasilla Mayor Verne Rupright along with the Wasilla Chamber of Commerce board of directors.

    Riverside, Calif. -- Chicago-based General Growth Properties said that Australian brand Cotton On Kids has opened a store at Galleria at Tyler, located in Riverside, Calif.

    The 3,185-sq.-ft. store is located on the lower level next to Helzberg Diamonds.

    MINNEAPOLIS — Target’s second-quarter sales increased 3.5% to $16.5 billion and the company’s profits grew 2.9% to $1.06 per share, five cents better than analysts expected.
