  • Williams-Sonoma brings the profits home

    SAN FRANCISCO — Williams-Sonoma reported that net income for the quarter ended May 1 jumped 62% to $31.6 million, from $19.5 million a year earlier, topping company expectations.

    Revenue rose 7.4% to $770.8 million, better than expected.

    Same-store sales, which includes direct-to-consumer revenue, rose 9%. Same-store sales rose 3.1% at the namesake brand, 7.9% at Pottery Barn and a record 11% at Pottery Barn Kids.

  • Children's Place Q1 profit up 4%, forecasts miss Street

    Secaucus, N.J. -- The Children's Place Retail Stores reported Thursday that profit for the quarter ended April 30 rose 4% to $29.1 million, compared with $27.9 million a year earlier. The retailer cited better product assortment, strong online sales and inventory-control efforts for the improved performance.

    Children’s Place also increased the low end of its full-year earnings outlook range, but its 2011 and second-quarter forecasts missed Wall Street's expectations.

  • Limited Brands posts double-digit comps growth in Q1

    COLUMBUS, Ohio — Limited Brands reported that adjusted earnings per share for the first quarter ended April 30, were 40 cents compared with adjusted earnings per share of 25 cents for the quarter ended May 1.  First quarter adjusted net income was $129.8 million compared with adjusted net income of $82.9 million last year, the company reported. 

    Limited Brands reported that comparable-store sales for the first quarter increased 15%, and net sales were $2.217 billion compared to $1.932 billion last year.  

  • Hot Topic loss widens in Q1

    City of Industry, Calif. -- Hot Topic reported Wednesday that its loss for the fiscal first quarter widened to $7.7 million, compared to a net loss of $1.8 million last year.

    The first quarter results include $12.4 million of expenses for the implementation of the previously announced charges for strategic business changes and cost reduction plan.

    Revenue dipped 0.8% to $161.3 million compared with $162.6 million for the first quarter last year. Same-store sales edged up 0.2%.

  • J.C. Penney to increase Energy Star certifications to 400 stores

    Plano, Texas -- J.C. Penney Co. announced Thursday that it will up its participation in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program to 400 stores by the end of 2013. Energy Star certification is awarded to buildings that rank within the top 25% of similar commercial buildings nationwide by meeting strict energy performance levels set by the EPA.

    J.C. Penney has a companywide goal to reduce facility energy use 20% by 2015.

  • Comps, currency and 54 new stores boost international sales

    Sales at Walmart’s international division increased 11.5% to $27.9 billion, aided to a large degree by a $1.3 billion currency exchange benefit, without which the sales increase would have been a more modest 6.2%.

  • C-store chain GasAmerica deploys JobApp Network to improve hiring

    Bloomfield Hills, Mich. -- Convenience-store operator GasAmerica is utilizing JobApp Network’s automated hiring management solution for c-stores. Following a phased approach, the Indiana-based chain has now completed rolling out the solution to all of its 86 locations.

    According to GasAmerica, hiring success starts with JobApp, which makes it easy for people to apply around the clock.

  • Staples cuts outlook and scales back expansion as profit disappoints

    Framingham, Mass. – Staples reported Wednesday that first-quarter profit rose 5% to $198.2 million, compared with $188.8 million a year earlier. Results were boosted by overseas strength and increased buying by small businesses in North America.

    But results were softer than expected, and the company cut its full-year earnings guidance. Its earnings outlook for the second quarter and the year are below Wall Street estimates.

    Revenue rose 2% to $6.18 billion, from $6.06 billion a year ago. Same-store sales slipped 1%.
