  • One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

    An article that recently caught my eye adds more evidence to my growing suspicion (and I know I am far from alone in this) that the near-term to mid-term retail outlook might not be quite as positive as we may have thought just a few months ago. The piece, “Gap Stands out Among Retailers in Tough Quarter,” in Women’s Wear Daily highlighted the sobering second-quarter numbers from a long list of big retail brands.   • Pep Boys remain cautiously optimistic following Q2 results

    The Pep Boys are remaining cautiously optimistic that there will be an increase in demand for tires this year, following a comparable store sales decrease of 1.3% for the second quarter ended Aug. 3. 

    Sales for the quarter increased 0.4% to $527.6 million from $525.7 million for the prior-year quarter. The company’s operating profit for the quarter, adjusted to exclude merger-related costs, was $19.4 million as compared to $15.5 million for the second quarter of fiscal 2012. 

  • Christopher & Banks narrows loss; plans new store openings

    Minneapolis -- Christopher & Banks Corp. reported a loss of $265,000 for the quarter ended Aug. 4, narrowed from a $2.2 million loss in the year-ago period. Sales edged up 1% to $104.2 million from $103.4 million, and same-store sales climbed 7.7%.

    Under the leadership of CEO LuAnn Via, the company is in the early stages of a turnaround, with store openings on tap for both fiscal 2013 and a longer-term three-year period.

  • Spencer Gifts selects Agilence for exception reporting

    Mt. Laurel, N.J. - Spencer Gifts, LLC will deploy Retail 20/20 exception-based reporting technology from Agilence. Spencer Gifts plans to use the Retail 20/20 solution to build complex reports and dashboards and obtain near real-time visibility into store operations.

  • Restoration Hardware continues upward momentum

    Restoration Hardware plans to open full line design galleries in Greenwich, Atlanta and Los Angeles in 2014, and is currently in negotiations to open more than 30 locations in other key markets. The next generation full line design galleries will be larger and showcase the company’s assortment and new businesses.

  • A Golden Week at Westfield San Francisco Centre

    Westfield San Francisco Centre has embraced the National Day Golden Week holiday that runs from Oct. 1- Oct. 7 every year — in China.

    During Golden Week, more than 120 million residents of the People’s Republic of China travel to visit family and friends in the People’s Republic and overseas. Large numbers visit San Francisco, home of the largest Chinatown outside of Asia.

  • Wal-Mart exec appointed to World Affairs Council board

    Fumbi Chima, Walmart VP of global technology services and strategic partnerships, has been elected to the World Affairs Council-Washington, D.C., board of directors.

    Chima is responsible for Walmart’s vendor management office, project management office and its global technology services office in India, as well as the IT asset management team.

  • Charming Charlie won over by analytics

    Houston – Charming Charlie is establishing a “single version of the truth” across multiple business units, including merchandising, store operations, planning and finance, using the ARC Merchandise Analytics solution from Manthan Systems. The solution is designed to deliver real-time merchandise and performance insights across the retail enterprise.
