  • Study: Mobile to grab majority of online display profits in 2020

    Mobile display advertising continues to surge, and it’s on pace to claim a significant portion of online advertising revenue.   In fact, more than three-quarters of all online display advertising income will stem from mobile by 2020, according to data from analytics provider by IHS Markit.  
  • Analysis: J.C. Penney finally getting its house in order

    Commentary by Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, comments on J.C. Penney’s fourth quarter:     Although JCP ended its fiscal year with a shrink in sales, it can take some comfort from the fact that the decreases are modest and that it managed to outperform its main department store rivals.  
  • Specialty athletic retailer grows profit for seventh straight year

    Despite a softer sales environment, Foot Locker reported strong fourth quarter earnings — surpassing analyst estimates.   For the fourth quarter ended January 28, 2017, the specialty athletic retailer’s profits hit $189 million, or $1.42 per share, compared with net income of $158 million, or $1.14 per share in the same period of 2015. This exceeded analyst estimates of $1.31 per share.  
  • Canadian retailer posts lower Q4 sales

    Weaker results in its European, Saks Off 5th and Gilt operations contributed to lower fourth quarter sales for Hudson’s Bay Company   For the fourth quarter ended January 28, 2017, the company’s consolidated comparable sales decreased 1.2%. Specifically, DSG (Hudson’s Bay, Lord & Taylor and Home Outfitters) same-store sales increased 0.6%, and Saks Fifth Avenue comparable sales increased 0.1%.   
  • Report: Sears slashes HQ jobs

    On the heels of announcing a comprehensive restructuring plan, Sears eliminated 130 jobs at its corporate office on Thursday, Feb. 23.   The layoffs, which are part of a $1 billion cost-cutting plan, were relayed in an email sent to corporate employees Thursday afternoon, according to Business Insider.   
  • Havertys beats Q4 estimates

    Better control over pricing and inventory helped boost Havertys fourth quarter earnings, beating analyst expectations.   Net sales for the quarter ended December 31, 2016, increased 2.2% to $220.6 million, compared to analyst expectations of $220.61 million.   Same-store sales rose 2.5%, and the average written ticket was up 2.6%, while custom upholstery written business rose 1.9%.  
  • Report: Lowe’s terminates more than 500 employees

    Lowe’s is the latest retailer making job cuts.   The home improvement retailer has laid off more than 500 full-time corporate employees company-wide — its latest effort to streamline the company and boost profitability, the Charlotte Observer reported.    
  • Tough times for GNC

    GNC Holdings Inc. on Thursday posted dismal results for its fourth quarter and said it was suspending its quarterly dividend in a move to reduce its debt.   The nutritional supplements retailer posted a loss of $433.4 million, or $6.35 a share, compared to a profit of $42.9 million in the year-ago period. Excluding certain items, earnings came in at 7 cents per share, well below the 36 cents that Wall Street analysts expected.  
  • C-store chain improves workforce management operations

    Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores is getting its stores on the same page.   The convenience and fuel chain, which operates more than 400 locations in 40 states, employs more than 17,000 people. By adding Reflexis Workforce Manager, it will have a consistent way to manage its budgeting, forecasting, and labor scheduling across the enterprise.   
  • Target veteran joins Famous Footwear

    Caleres has made two executive appointment in its Famous Footwear division.   The company named Karlyn Mattson as chief merchandising officer, leading Famous Footwear’s buying, merchandising, planning, allocation and analytic functions.     Mattson joins Caleres from a 25-year career at Target Corp., where she was most recently VP merchandise manager of shoes, accessories and intimate Apparel for retail and online. She held leadership positions at May Company and Macy’s.
