  • Auto parts/accessories retailer in slow gear in Q1

    Advance Auto Parks turned in a disappointing performance in its first quarter.   The chain reported earnings of $1.46 per share, down from $2.16 per share in the year-ago period. Adjusted EPS was $1.60, far short of the $2.16 per share FactSet consensus.   
  • Teen apparel retailer narrows loss amid sales gains

    A tough February couldn't keep Tilly's down, which reported better-than-expected results for its first quarter.    The teen apparel and footwear retailer narrowed its loss in the first quarter to $161,000, or 1 cent a share, compared with a net loss of $2.7 million, or 10 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Its results were better than expected.    Net sales inched up 0.6% to $120.9 million, better easily beating the Street. Same-store sales rose 0.6%.  
  • Chico's profit, sales and outlook disappoint

    Chico's FAS gave a downbeat outlook amid first quarter earnings and sales that missed Wall Street estimates.    The women's apparel retailer reported net income of $33.6 million, or $0.26 per diluted share, in the period ended April 30, compared to net income of $31.1 million, or $0.23 per diluted share, in the year-ago period. Analysts had estimated earnings per share of 29 cents for the quarter.  
  • Athletic and apparel retailer off to slow start in Q1

    Foot Locker posted weaker-than-expected earnings and sales for its first quarter after high promotional activity and getting off to a slow start in February.        Net income for the company's first quarter ended April 29, 2017 was $180 million, or $1.36 per share, compared with net income of $191 million, or $1.39 per share in the year-ago period.  
  • Menswear retailer swings to loss in Q1

    Destination XL Group Inc. posted disappointed earnings and sales in its first quarter, but sounded a confident note that it was back on track.   In its quarterly earnings release, the big-and-tall apparel retailer also refuted a recent report, which it said had been repeated by various media outlets, that called into question the company’s ability to repay its debt.  
  • Ace gains on income with minimal movement on revenue

    Ace Hardware reported a slight increase in revenue during the first quarter, as well as more substantial progress in net income.   Revenue came in at $1.2 billion, up 0.1% from the first quarter of 2016. Net income of $28.3 million was up 8.4% over the year.   Same-store sales were down 0.2% due to decreased customer traffic, reported by the approximately 3,000 Ace retailers who share daily retail sales data.  
  • Things are looking up at Gap, led by Old Navy

    Gap Inc.’s reported a 12% jump in first quarter profit amid another strong performance from its Old Navy division.    Net income rose to $143 million, or 36 cents per share, in the quarter ended April 29, from $127 million, or 32 cents per share, a year earlier. Its results easily beat the Street, which had predicted earnings of 29 cents per share.   
  • Off-pricer’s Q1 earnings beat Street

    Expansion-minded Ross Stores turned in a solid performance in its first quarter amid what its CEO called “uncertainty and volatility” in the retail environment.    The off-price retailer, which is opening some 80 to 90 stores annually, reported earnings per share for the quarter ended April 29, 2017 of $.82, up from $.73 in the year-ago period. Net earnings grew to $321 million, compared to $291 million in the prior year.

    American Eagle Outfitters’ profit shrunk in the first quarter amid charges and discounting.  
  • More big numbers from Home Depot

    The world’s largest home improvement retailer raised its earnings expectations as it announced first quarter sales and earnings gains that beat the Street.   Net earnings for the first quarter of fiscal 2017 were $2.0 billion, better than expected, compared with net earnings of $1.8 billion, in the same quarter last year. For the first quarter of fiscal 2017, diluted earnings per share increased 16.0% from the same period in the prior year.
