  • Sales slide continues at Barnes & Noble

    Barnes & Noble reduced its loss in its first quarter due to cost savings even as its sales continued to fall.   The company reported a net loss of $10.8 million for the quarter ended July 29, or 15 cents per share, compared to a loss of $14.4 million, or cents per share, for the year-ago period. Analysts had expected a loss of 12 cents a share.   
  • Value retailer posts strong Q2 sales

    99 Cents Only Stores reduced its loss in the second quarter amid increased operational efficiencies and surging sales.   The retailer reported a net loss of $33.6 million for the quarter ended July 28, compared to net loss of $35.1 million in the year-ago period. Net sales increased 8.9% to $540.5 million.  
  • Dollar General beats Street, but profit slides; ups forecast

    Dollar General turned in mixed results for its second quarter, with gains in sales but a dip in profits and a decline in gross margins.    Net sales rose 8.1% to $5.83 billion in the quarter ended Aug. 4, compared to $5.39 billion in the year-ago quarter, better than analysts were expecting. Same-store sales increased 2.6%, also better than expected, driven by increases in average transaction amounts and customer traffic.   
  • Warehouse club giant tops estimates in August

    Costco Wholesale Corp. turned in a strong performance in August, helped by a big increase in online sales.    Net sales rose 10% to $9.8 billion for the month of August, from $8.9 billion during the similar period last year. Total same-store sales rose 7.3%, higher than the 6.1% Wall Street expected. Same-store U.S. sales rose 7.4%, easily topping estimates for a 4.9% to 5.3% increase. Costco's comparable e-commerce sales jumped 26% in August.   
  • Chico's misses on Q2 sales and profit; taps beauty exec as Soma president

    Chico's FAS' profit and revenue declined in the second quarter amid same-store declines across all its banners.      The women's apparel retailer also named Mary van Praag as president of Soma, effective September 5, 2017.  She most recently served as CEO of Perricone MD. Prior to that, she held senior executive roles at Coty, and Johnson & Johnson's beauty division.  
  • Footwear giant puts best foot forward in Q2

    The parent company of such brands as Famous Footwear, Sam Edelman, and Allen Edmonds topped the Street in its second quarter, fueled by a strong back-to-school selling season.    Caleres reported that its adjusted net earnings rose 4.4% to $20.6 million. Adjusted diluted earnings a share were 48 cents, which topped estimates of 44 cents.  
  • Consumers buoyant in August as confidence rises

    Consumer confidence increased in August to the second highest level since late 2000.    The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index rose to 122.9 in August, up from 120 in the prior month. Economists had expected the index to rise to 122.5 in August.    The Present Situation Index increased from 145.4 to 151.2. The Expectations Index rose marginally from 103.0 last month to 104.0.  
  • Athletic footwear retailer adopts poison pill; lowers guidance

    The Finish Line's board on Monday adopted a shareholders right plan as the retailer warned of a grim second quarter and a steep decline in sales and profits for the year.    
  • J. Crew names finance head amid ongoing sales decline

    J.Crew Group named an internal associate as CFO as the retailer continues to struggle to turn around its namesake brand.   The retailer announced that Vincent Zanna, previously senior VP of finance and treasurer, has been promoted to CFO and treasurer, effective immediately. He will continue to report to Michael Nicholson, who was previously CFO and COO, and now serves as president and COO.    
  • Visa and Uber take rewards program nationwide

    Uber riders nationwide can now earn credits for shopping and dining under a rewards program with Visa.   The program, Visa Local Offers with Uber, launched last year in the San Francisco and Los Angeles markets. It has been relaunched to be made available to Uber riders across the country. The program is open to Uber riders with an eligible U.S.-issued Visa card on file in the Uber app.
