  • Walgreens, Rite Aid miss expectations in February

    New York City -- Walgreens said Thursday its same-store sales in February rose 3.1%, but the growth was slower than Wall Street expected. Analysts expected, on average, expected a 3.5% increase.

    The company said pharmacy same-store sales rose 2.7% but were hurt by generic drug introductions over the last year. Non-pharmacy, or front-end, revenue increased 3.8%.

    Rite Aid Corp. said Thursday that its same-store sales rose 1% in February, less than the 1.5% increase analysts had predicted.

    San Diego -- Teradata Corp. signed a definitive agreement to acquire Aster Data Systems, a market leader and pioneer in advanced analytics and the management of a variety of diverse data that is not structured.

  • Giving back to the shareholders

    The Walmart board approved a hefty 21% increase to what was already one of the retail industry’s richest dividend payouts, the company announced late Thursday. The increase approved by the board puts Walmart’s annual dividend at $1.46 a share for the current fiscal year compared with last year’s dividend of $1.21. The dividend will be paid in quarterly installment of 56.5 cents.

  • Costco comps beat Sam’s but BJ’s didn’t

    Costco and BJ’s were out with quarterly results this week following the release of Sam’s Club results last week that included flat operating profits and a 2.7% same-store sales increase excluding gas. Those results, characterized by Sam’s Club president and CEO Brian Cornell as strong and very pleasing, are consistent with results out this week from club competitors. Both Costco and BJ’s reported quarterly results that were in-line with or beat analysts’ expectations.

  • Edens & Avant makes executive appointments

    Columbia, S.C. -- Edens & Avant has announced the promotion of Carol Hall to VP portfolio management. In her new position, she will be responsible for creating value through the delivery of technology-enabled process and analytical tools to the investment management, property management and leasing teams.

  • Collective Brands narrows Q4 loss

    Topeka, Kan. -- Collective Brands, the parent company of Payless ShoeSource, said Wednesday that its net loss narrowed slightly in the fourth quarter as sales improved in its wholesale unit. The performance beat Wall Street expectations.

    For the three months ended Jan. 29, Collective Brands lost $10.1 million, compared with a loss of $10.9 million in the year-ago period.

  • Increased ticket, traffic drives up Pier 1 comps

    FORT WORTH, Texas -- Pier 1 Imports reported significant gains in fourth-quarter and full-year comps due to increases in average ticket, conversion and traffic. 

    The company reported that comparable-store sales for the fourth quarter ended Feb. 26 increased 8.9% compared with last year’s comparable-store sales increase of 6.5% for the fourth quarter ended Feb. 27, 2010. Total sales for the quarter improved to $427 million compared with  $396 million in the year-ago quarter. 

  • Q4, fiscal-year comps up for Publix

    LAKELAND, Fla. — Publix on Tuesday disclosed a 4.4% increase in its fourth-quarter sales, reaching $6.4 billion, while comparable-store sales for quarter also rose 3.2%.

    Net earnings for the retailer totaled $342.1 million, compared with $284.2 million in the year-ago period, an increase of 20.4%. Earnings per share for the fourth quarter increased to 44 cents for 2010, up from 36 cents per share in 2009.
