  • Pier 1 Q1 sales up, raises earnings forecast

    Fort Worth, Texas -- Pier 1 Imports said Thursday its same-store sales rose 10.2% in the first quarter, helped by better traffic, more purchases being made and a higher average receipt. The retailer also gave a first-quarter earnings forecast above Wall Street's expectations.

    Total revenue for the period ended May 28 climbed 10% to $335 million from $306 million.
     

  • Target May comps miss forecast

    MINNEAPOLIS — Target reported a 2.8% same-store sales increase for May, falling short of Wall Street's expectation for a 3.5% increase, as consumers remained cautious. The retailer reported that net sales for the four-week period were $4.8 billion, an increase of 3.8%t from $4.6 billion for the four weeks ended May 29, 2010. 

  • Rite Aid's same-store sales show improvement

    CAMP HILL, Pa. — Same-store sales at Rite Aid increased by 1.3% in May, compared with the year-ago period, the retail pharmacy chain said Thursday.

    Reporting sales for the five-week period that ended May 28, Rite Aid said front-end same-store sales increased 1.8%, while same-store sales in the pharmacy increased by 1%, including a 129-basis point offset due to introductions of new generic drugs. Prescription count increased 0.1%.

    Total drug store sales during the period were nearly $2.5 billion, a 1% increase over $2.45 billion in May 2010.

  • Pier 1 Q1 comps up 10.2%

    FORT WORTH, Texas — Pier 1 Imports reported that comparable-store sales for the first quarter ended May 28 increased 10.2% versus last year’s increase of 14.3%. Total sales for the quarter improved to $335 million compared to $306 million in the year-ago quarter. 

    The comparable store sales increases for the first quarter were driven by increases in traffic, conversion rate and average ticket, the company reported.

    The company said it expects first-quarter earnings per share to be 11 cents to 12 cents.

  • Earnings miss doesn’t derail Dollar General’s growth

    Sales and profits continued to pile up at the nation’s largest dollar store operator during the first quarter as shoppers sought value at the retailer’s 9,500 stores.

    The company reported a 5.4% increase in same-store sales and said total sales increased 10.9% to $3.45 billion during the quarter ended April 29. Profits adjusted to account for several one-time items increased 14% to $166 million, while earnings per share of 48 centers were two cents shy of analysts’ consensus estimate due to gross margins pressures.

  • Macy's May sales rise 7.4%

    CINCINNATI — The day before most retailers report monthly results, Macy’s said Wednesday that same-store sales climbed 7.4% in May and total revenue rose 8.5% to $1.94 billion.

    The department store operator also raised its expectations for the second quarter, saying it now expects second quarter same-store revenue to climb about 5%. Its prior forecast called for an approximately 4% increase.

  • Tesco continues to focus on Fresh & Easy

    EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Tesco said it is turning its attention to its U.S. supermarket chain, according to the company's annual report.

    According to the company, despite the fact that its U.S. operations, which include its Fresh & Easy supermarket chain, have been slower to recover when compared with its European counterparts, Tesco said, "We are now seeing signs of improvement. ... Customer feedback at Fresh & Easy remains excellent, and strong growth in customer numbers is driving steady sales improvement in each store."

  • JoS. A. Bank Q1 profit up 13%

    Hampstead, Md. -- JoS. A. Bank Clothiers said Wednesday that its first-quarter net income increased 12.7% to $17.8 million, compared with $15.8 million in the prior year.

    Total sales increased 8.5% to $193.3 million, from $178.1 million. Same-store sales edged up 0.1%.
