  • NRF: Bring the ILWU and PMA to D.C. for negotiations

    The National Retail Federation has called for President Obama to become involved in the ongoing contract negotiations between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) if a deal is not reached.

    “It has been nearly a week since President Obama dispatched Labor Secretary Perez to the West Coast to help settle the protracted contract dispute between the ILWU and PMA,” Jonathan Gold, VP for supply chain and customs policy, NRF, said in a statement.

  • Where is Amazon's same-day delivery service going next?

    Amazon is expanding its same-day delivery service not just to all of Manhattan, but to other New York City boroughs as well, with unknown implications for the retail industry.

    The e-commerce giant won't say, but it will say it has expanded its Prime Now same-day delivery service out of Manhattan for the first time and into select neighborhoods in Brooklyn.

    The service allows Amazon Prime subscribers in neighborhoods such as Brooklyn Heights, Fort Greene and Prospect Heights to get free delivery on a limited selection of goods within two hours of ordering.

    Ikea is moving ahead with its strategy to expand its footprint in the Midwest by finalizing plans on a massive new distribution center in Illinois.

    The retailer has submitted final plans to the City of Joliet, Ill., that would advance the development of its previously approved main Midwestern distribution center.

    Los Angeles -- The 29 West Coast ports, which handle 44% of container cargo in the U.S., are currently running at approximately 50-60% capacity, according to a report released Thursday by CBRE Group, the world’s largest commercial real estate services and investment firm. Five of the ports — Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, Tacoma and Seattle — are among the top 10 largest and busiest ports (by total TEU volume) in the United States.

    Canton, Mass. – Dunkin’ Donuts is growing its presence in the Hoosier state. The company has signed multi-unit store development agreements with two existing franchise groups to develop 46 restaurants in Indiana during the next several years.
