  • Office supplies giant adds robotics to fulfillment network

    Staples is making a bold move to modernize its supply chain.   The office supplies giant is adding a robotic material handling solution across its network of fulfillment centers. Designed by Great Star Industrial USA, LLC, the automated robotic storage and retrieval system incorporates two types of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) into a unified system that brings both high and low cubic velocity items to a single pick and pack station.  
  • Online giant in deal with unlikely retail partner

    Amazon is staking a claim in the appliance market in a big way in a partnership with Sears Holdings.   The embattled retailer announced it will sell its prized Kenmore-branded appliances on Amazon. The deal opens the way for the broadest distribution to date of Kenmore products outside of Sears stores and its websites. Distribution will be nationwide, and Sears Home Services and Innovel Solutions units will provide delivery, installation, and other services.

    Walmart is bringing 1,500 jobs to Florida as it continues to expand its e-commerce fulfillment network.  
  • Pizza giant launches aggressive hiring spree

    Pizza Hut is making big moves to improve the accuracy and reliability of its delivery experience.   The subsidiary of Yum! Brands plans to hire nearly 3,000 new drivers a month through the end of the year. The hiring effort, which will include full and part-time positions, will add approximately 14,000 new drivers across its delivery fleet, according to the company.   
  • Phillips Edison acquires Ralph’s-anchored center

    Chain Store Age’s “Fastest-Growing Acquirer” for 2016 continues to be hard at it in 2017.   Phillips Edison has purchased Sierra Del Oro Towne Center in Corona, California, about midway between Los Angeles and Palm Springs, for $28.6 million, it was announced this week.  
  • Jet.com makes a move to streamline urban deliveries

    Walmart’s e-commerce arm is making it easier for New Yorkers — especially those without a doorman — to get their deliveries.   Jet.com is teaming up with Latch, a provider of smart building access technologies, to integrate a reader-style electronic access product in 1,000 buildings in New York City. The installation, which is being paid for by the partners, will give more than 100,000 residents the ability to retrieve orders electronically, according to TechCrunch.  
  • Specialty retailer integrates omnichannel experience

    As Cole Haan expands its breadth, the retail experience must remain consistent — regardless of the touchpoint shoppers use.    In partnership with Aptos, the specialty retailer now has a platform that delivers a seamless customer experience throughout the entire shopping journey. Regardless of whether shoppers visit one of the company’s 259 stores across 30 countries, or shop online, now they will get a unified experience.  
  • West Virginia power center changes hands

    The Marketplace at Potomoc Towne Center in Ranson, West Virginia, has been acquired for $35.9 million by Heidenberg Properties Group and Strategic Real Estate Partners (SERP) in a joint venture deal. The seller was Carl Freeman Companies of Rockville, Maryland.
