  • Five Below to open 60 stores in 2013 and expand into Texas

    Philadelphia -- Teen and tween retailer Five Below will open 60 stores this year, including its first-ever locations in Texas.

    The retailer said it will open four to five stores in Austin, Texas, and 10 to 12 stores in Dallas by late summer, with the potential for more than 100 stars in the Lone Star Sate stores over time.

  • Gigante and Petco in deal to open stores in Mexico and Latin America

    New York -- Mexican supermarket and restaurant operator Gigante has entered into a joint venture with Petco Animal Supplies to open at least 50 stores in Mexico and other Latin American countries over seven years, Reuters reported.

    The first two Petco stores will open this year in Mexico City and Guadalajara, Gigante said in a release to the stock exchange.

    The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

  • Great American Group handles Bakers Footwear liquidation

    Woodland Hills, Calif. -- Great American Group said Friday it has been selected to handle the liquidation of Bakers Footwear Group, offering discounts for products in 56 of Bakers Footwear Groups’ remaining stores, as well as online at Bakersshoes.com.

    Bakers locations in Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia are part of the sale event.

  • Lowe’s makes management shifts

    Mooresville, N.C. -- Lowe’s Cos. Inc. said Thursday it has named Michael Jones chief merchandising officer, effective immediately. Jones was previously president of the North American and Latin American divisions of Husqvarna, an outdoor equipment manufacturer.

    The retailer also announced that Stephen J. Szilagyi has been promoted to supply chain executive, from his current position as SVP distribution.

  • Fresh Market to open at two Florida shopping centers

    Valrico, Fla. -- Indianapolis-based Kite Realty Group said Wednesday that The Fresh Market has leased 18,091 sq. ft. at Lithia Crossing, located in Valrico, Fla.
     
    The grocer will also open a store at Shops at Eagle Creek, in Naples, Fla. The new store will comprise 23,935 sq. ft.

     

  • Starbucks profit up 12%; 1,300 stores on tap for 2013

    Seattle -- Starbucks Corp. said its profit rose in its first quarter as customers spent more at its stores in the United States and Asia.

    Starbucks earned $432.2 million in the quarter ended December 30, 2012, compared with $382.1 million in the year-ago period.

    Revenue rose 11% to $3.8 billion, slightly below expectations.

    The company reported that global same-store sales rose 6%. In Europe, the metric fell 1%. Americas’ comparable store sales grew 7%. Same-store sales in the China/Asia Pacific region grew 11%.
