    Pier 1 shrank its store base and e-commerce penetration reached record levels during the company’s fourth quarter, a period in which profitability was marred by promotions, markdowns and supply chain issues.  
  • Old Navy taps Gap’s supply chief as president

    Gap Inc. has named a longtime member of its executive team to head up its Old Navy brand.

    The retailer appointed Sonia Syngal as global president of Old Navy, effective immediately, as it looks to reenergize its value-driven brand. She succeeds Stefan Larsson, who left last year to become CEO of Ralph Lauren Corp.

    Syngal, a 12-year Gap veteran, most recently served as executive VP of global supply chain and product operations for Gap Inc.

  • Study: Omnichannel, Amazon impact retail supply chain

    Increased customer expectations for a seamless front-end experience, as well as the “Amazon effect,” are having a significant influence on retailers’ back-end systems and operations.

    According to a new study of 24 senior retail supply chain executives from Auburn University’s Center for Supply Chain Innovation, the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) and Checkpoint Systems, “The State of the Retail Supply Chain,” 81% of respondents are either using, developing or investigating integrated demand planning.

  • Loblaw plans $1 billion enterprise growth investment

    Canadian supermarket and pharmacy retailer Loblaw Companies intends to expand in areas including real estate, e-commerce, IT and supply chain during 2016.

  • Discount grocer on fast-track

    Aldi is expanding its fledgling footprint in Southern California.

    On Thursday, April 21, the grocer will open six stores in Los Angeles County, three in Orange County and one store in San Bernardino County.

    The April openings are part of Aldi’s plan to open approximately 45 stores in Southern California by the end of 2016, eight of which opened last month.

    Currently, Aldi operates nearly 1,500 U.S. stores in 33 states.

  • Rite Aid fiscal 2016 year-end revenue exceeds $30 billion for first time

    Rite Aid on Friday reported revenues of $8.3 billion for its fourth quarter ended Feb. 27, representing an increase of 20.8%. Retail Pharmacy Segment revenues were $6.8 billion and decreased 0.3% compared to the prior year period primarily as a result of a decrease in same-store sales. Pharmacy Services Segment revenues were $1.5 billion.
     

  • Fast-fashion giant’s ambitious plans include 425 new stores

    Swedish retailer H&M will opens its 4,000th store as its expands its global footprint and ramps up e-commerce in 2016.

    The company plans to open a total of 425 new stores this year, and expand its e-commerce efforts to Japan and 10 additional markets.

    The global retailer disclosed its aggressive physical and digital growth plans with the release of financial results for the period ended Feb. 29, which were negatively affected by the strong U.S. dollar.

  • H&M will open its 4,000th unit, ramp up e-commerce

    A total of 425 new H&M stores are slated to open this year, including the new market of Puerto Rico, and the fast fashion retailer also will expand its e-commerce efforts to Japan and 10 additional markets.

    The global retailer disclosed its aggressive physical and digital growth plans with the release of financial results for the period ended Feb. 29, which were negatively affected by the strong U.S. dollar. H&M is based in Stockholm, Sweden.
