  • JLL executive joins Corporate Solutions practice

    Chicago -- Jones Lang LaSalle said Friday that Cedric Thurman has joined the firm’s Corporate Retail Solutions practice. As senior VP, Thurman will focus on enhancing the firm’s ability to deliver profit-enhancing strategies to meet the retail industry’s growing demand for strategic outsourced real estate services.

    Thurman is based out of Jones Lang LaSalle’s Chicago office, reporting to Lew Kornberg, managing director, Corporate Retail Solutions.

  • Blockbuster cleared for sale process, will avoid liquidation

    New York City -- A Manhattan bankruptcy judge on Thursday has cleared the path for Blockbuster to sell itself to a group of hedge funds, preventing the movie rental chain from having to liquidate its assets.

    Judge Burton R. Lifland has approved procedures for the auction of Blockbuster, with a $290 million initial offer from a group of senior bondholders led by hedge fund Monarch Alternative Capital.
     

  • Alimentation Couche-Tard profit leaps nearly 30% in Q3

    Laval, QC -- Canadian c-store operator Alimentation Couche-Tard reported Thursday that net income for its fiscal third quarter rose 29.6% to $71 million, compared with $54.8 million in the year-ago period.

    Revenues rose 13.7% to $5.6 billion. Same-store merchandise sales were up 3.9% in the United States and 0.4% in Canada.
     
    Alimentation Couche-Tard operates a network of 5,874 convenience stores in the United States and Canada.

  • Zumiez Q4 profit nearly doubles, to open 44 stores

    Everett, Wash. -- Zumiez reported Thursday that net income for the quarter ended Jan. 29 almost doubled to $15 million, compared with net income of $8.8 million in the year-ago period.

    Sales increased 17.9% to $156.2 million, from $132.4 million. Same-store sales increased 13 %.

    For the full year, sales rose 17.5% to $478.8 million, from $407.6 million. Profit rose to $24.2 million, from $9.1 million in fiscal 2009.

    Same-store sales increased 11.9% in fiscal 2010.

  • Jo-Ann Q4 profit up 8.9%, will open 55 to 60 stores in 2011

    New York City -- Jo-Ann Stores reported Wednesday that net income for the quarter ended Jan. 29 rose 8.9% to $40.4 million, compared with $37.1 million in the year-ago period.

    Sales increased 3.6% to $624.1 million, just missing Wall Street’s expected $625.1 million. Same-store sales rose 2%.

    Chairman and CEO Darrell Webb said the fabric and crafts retailer plans to open 55 to 60 new stores and remodel 60 more this year.

  • Dollar Super Store to open at Santa Fe Springs Marketplace

    Whittier, Calif. -- Watt Commercial Properties said that it has signed Dollar Super Store to a five-year lease for 5,762 sq. ft. of space at Santa Fe Springs Marketplace, an 144,261-sq.-ft. retail center located in Whittier, Calif.

    Santa Fe Springs Marketplace is 97% leased to several tenants including Food 4 Less, Rite Aid, O’Reilly and Frazee Paint.

  • P&G names new global product supply officer

    CINCINNATI -- Procter & Gamble announced that Keith Harrison, global product supply officer, will retire effective Sept. 1, after more than 41 years of service.  Until his retirement, Harrison will serve as officer on special assignment, reporting to Bob McDonald, chairman of the board, president and CEO.

    The company announced that Yannis Skoufalos currently VP product supply, global operations, has been elected global product supply officer, succeeding Harrison effective July 1.

  • Caruso Affiliated launches construction of mixed-use project

    Los Angeles -- Caruso Affiliated said it has begun construction on 8500 Burton Way, an upscale residential and ground-floor retail property featuring Trader Joe’s, located in a flourishing region of Los Angeles, adjacent to Beverly Hills.

    The eight-story building combines contemporary architectural elements with rich materials, and is moving forward at a time when most other commercial development has stalled.
